Will a Relocation Move help you find a better job?
Moving or being willing to relocate is apparently a big plus as far as any potential employer is concerned. According to a study from CareerBuilder.com and Apartments.com, conducted by Harris Interactive (in the US, in 2007), just over 30% of employers say they have paid to relocate an employee from another area to their company's location in the last two years. With 10% willing to spend more than £5,000, to get the right person for the job.
From employees' experiences, 42% say they've relocated at least once. In terms of workers who are happy to undertake a relocation move, 59% of employees say they'd be willing to relocate to another city for a new job. Here are some ideas on how to negotiate a relocation package during an interview:
- Make sure you have done your homework - Get quotes from companies and check the cost of living between your area and the new area in which the company is located. Knowing these figures can help you when you're discussing the issue with the employer because it shows them that you're interested and have taken the time to find out.
- Timing - Wait until the job is offered to start negotiating relocation expenses. Ask if the company is willing to consider including hiring a relocation agent, especially if you are an expat or moving internationally.
- Be enthusiastic - No-one wants to hire someone who is 'OK' they want someone who is 'excited' or 'motivated' by the prospect of a new job
When asked about the type of living accommodations workers chose when relocating for a job, 41% said they moved into an apartment, 36% said a house, 5% said hotel and 20% made other arrangements.
So, employees if you want a better job or at least a prospect of a better opportunity, relocation may be the answer. It certainly seems that in the UK's competitive job market, companies and HR departments who want the best staff, will be considering relocating them as do their US colleagues.
