The best of British food

06 September, 2017

British people are patriotic when it comes to their food, with 43% of people saying that British food is the best in the world. The best of British dishes are big on comfort, timeless and tasty, from Friday’s classic fish and chips to Sunday’s traditional family roast dinner.

The British are also huge fans of programmes about food. Last year, the final of the Great British Bake Off was watched by a peak of 14.8 million people – over half of the British viewing public!

With that in mind, we have put together this list of British favourites for those who are moving to the UK and want to try the best of traditional British cuisine:

1) The ‘Full English’ Breakfast

The combination of bacon and sausage is one of the essential elements of a full English fry up. Other elements include eggs (fried, poached, or scrambled), grilled tomatoes, fried bread, baked beans and a hash brown.

2) Fish and Chips

Usually enjoyed as a “Friday treat”, fish and chips are just that – fried cod in batter with chips. Fish and chips are usually always bought from a fish and chip shop, and the chips are smothered in salt and vinegar. It’s worth noting that fish and chips always taste better by the seaside.

3) Roast Dinner

One of Britain’s favourites, the roast is arguably the most traditional British meal. Served on a Sunday, it consists of roasted meat, roast potatoes, gravy, and vegetables.

4) Pie

The Brits love a pie, so much so that there is a dedicated British Pie Week to celebrate the dish!

5) Bacon Sandwich

Another breakfast favourite, the bacon sandwich (otherwise known as a bacon butty) is best with hot crispy bacon with either tomato ketchup or brown sauce between bread.

6) Toad in the hole

This dish has a misleading name – there are no toads! This classic dish consists of sausages in a crispy batter Yorkshire pudding, with onion gravy and vegetables.

7) Afternoon Tea

A cream tea is an afternoon light meal, with sandwiches, small cakes, scones, clotted cream and jam.

8) Strawberries and Cream

A summer favourite, fresh strawberries and cream are renowned for being Wimbledon’s choice of dessert!

9) Victoria Sponge

The Victoria sponge is often referred to as the ‘Queen’s cake’ as it was named after Queen Victoria. It’s a simple sponge cake with a layer of jam and whipped cream, a true British favourite.

10) Apple Crumble and Custard

Homemade apple crumble is a warm and comforting dessert, with tart baked apples and a golden oaty crumb topping. Best served with custard!
