WESTMINSTER WILL OPEN SIX SCHOOLS IN CHINA

A leading independent school, Westminster School, is set to open six new schools in China in what is said to be one of the most significant expansions of a UK school brand into China.

The schools are being created with the help of a Hong Kong education firm, and Westminster has said that the income from this deal will fund bursaries for disadvantaged students in London. The first school to open in China will be in Chengdu, scheduled to open in 2020.

The top London private school is to sign an agreement with Hong Kong firm HKMETG to open the six bi-lingual schools. This event will be attended by school standards minister Nick Gibb, who this week has been encouraging pupils to learn Mandarin Chinese as “the most spoken language in the world.”

Whilst the agreement will mean more bursaries for those needing financial support, the school already sponsors a high-achieving sixth from – Harris Westminster – which does not charge any fees.

Westminster’s head, Patrick Derham, has said that the partnership with China will deepen a cultural collaboration between the UK and China.

Westminster is not the first branch of schools to open in China, with Harrow, Dulwich College, Malvern and Wellington College already open.
