The UK and EU have reached an agreement to ensure workers’ rights during the Brexit transitional period, which has been set to end at the close of 2020.
Workers from the European Union arriving in the UK during the transition period will enjoy all of the same settlement rights as everyone who already lives in Britain, it was announced in Brussels on Monday.
The UK Government had previously suggested restricted rights for those arriving after Britain’s exit from the EU in March next year. However, Brexit Secretary David Davis and Michael Barnier the Chief EU negotiator have decided that full residency rights will be granted.
It was also agreed that the UK would now be able to reach free trade agreements with non-EU nations as well as the EU itself, coming into force at the beginning of 2021 at the earliest. The transition period will run until the end of 2020, not until March 2021 as the British had wanted.
However, an agreement on what will happen to the border between the Republic of Ireland and Ulster after Brexit has still not been finalised, with Mr Barnier adding that there is a lot of work yet to be done on this matter.
Mr Barnier said that it had been agreed that Northern Ireland would effectively remain part of the single market if no alternative agreement was arranged.
